It’s hard to say if Power Book III: Raising Kanan will be good, but if the official trailer Starz ditched for the franchise’s latest spinoff is any indication, this offer is going to be on fire.
Set on LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out”, the 90-second montage debuted Thursday and quickly established Kanan’s mother, Raquel (Madam Secretary Patina Miller) as drug queen and her son ( Kirby Buckets’ Mekai Curtis) as the crafty criminal prince on the rise. Power Book III premieres Sunday, July 18 on premium cable and, according to the trailer, takes place in a high-stakes world filled with violence, rivalry, cops, local boys, wanking kids and more.
Raquel, meanwhile, tries to get Kanan to be smart and get away from the drug world, which only makes him want to run faster. In addition to her mothering responsibilities, Raquel tries to keep her drug empire afloat and isn’t afraid to check guys out or pull out the game to get her point across. “I’m not getting down on my knees, Nick,” she says in the trailer. “Neither for you nor for any man. “
In addition to Miller and Curtis, the standout cast also includes House’s Omar Epps as Police Detective Malcolm Howard; Ballers’ London Brown; Malcolm M. Mays of Snowfall; Hailey Kilgore of the village; Joey Bada $$ of Two Distant Strangers and Quincy Brown of Dope.
