Here’s how iCarly explains Sam’s absence from the Revival premiere

The first three episodes of Paramount + ‘s iCarly revival were dropped on Thursday, reuniting fans with old friends while introducing several new faces.

Nine years after the end of the original Nickelodeon series, Carly (Miranda Cosgrove), Freddie (Nathan Kress) and Spencer (Jerry Trainor) are back to give this whole “web show” another chance, with Carly’s roommate. Harper (Laci Mosley) and Freddie’s daughter, Millicent (Jaidyn Triplett) joining them in their crusade of ridicule.

And while we don’t want to dwell too much on the past, we should probably be talking about Sam, the only hard-core member of the original series not to return for the revival. Although she was briefly mentioned in the premiere, it wasn’t until much later in the episode – when Carly was considering returning to the web hosting game – that we find out what Jennette McCurdy’s character did.

Carly: I just want to do things again.
Freddie: You don’t need a partner to do this.
Carly: I don’t need a partner, I need Sam. But she’s gone to follow her happiness with this biker gang.
Freddie: The Obliterators. Hope she’s okay.
Carly: It’s Sam. I hope they’re okay. I just wish she was there so we could do iCarly again.

Is the explanation totally random and completely crazy? Sure. But it’s also very much in the spirit of iCarly. Plus, Sam had a motorcycle in the 2012 original series finale, so she actually follows.

Of course, if you’ve been following the news, you know that you shouldn’t expect Sam to appear in the flesh. During an appearance on Anna Faris’ Empty Inside podcast earlier this year, McCurdy revealed she was done with comedy.

“I’m so ashamed of the games I’ve played in the past,” said McCurdy. I resent my career in many ways. I feel so dissatisfied with the roles I played and I felt like it was the most cheesy, the most embarrassing… My friends at 15, they don’t say, “Oh, cool you are. in this Nickelodeon show ”. It was embarrassing. “

When TVLine spoke to the cast before iCarly came back, Cosgrove told us, “We’re definitely talking about Sam on the show. We all really wanted Jennette to be on the show, but she’s doing different things right now.
