Supernatural officially gets a prequel series. Last year, the popular sci-fi adventure series ended after fifteen seasons, much to the chagrin of fans who have long followed Jared Padalecki and Jensen ackles like the Winchester brothers. Now it has been revealed that The CW is looking to revive the series by taking the story back in time, as the network commissioned a Supernatural prequel series dubbed The Winchesters who will follow Sam and Dean’s parents.
Ackles, who is expected to reprise his role as Dean Winchester and serve as the series’ narrator, is the executive producer of The Winchesters. His wife Danneel Ackles, who appeared in a recurring role of Danneel in Supernatural, is also an executive producer. Former Supernatural co-executive producer Robbie Thompson will serve as executive producer and screenwriter for the series. The CW gave the prequel a script engagement.
Before Sam and Dean, there were John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters are the epic, never-before-seen love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line not just to save their love, but the whole world.
“After Supernatural wrapped up its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because, like we say on the show, ‘nothing really ends, does it?’” Said Ackles to Deadline in a statement. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew that the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the story of supernatural origin. I always felt like that. my character, Dean, wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how she was born. So I like the idea that he takes us on this journey. “
John and Mary Winchester previously appeared in Supernatural, where they were played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith respectively. It was explained that Mary was killed by a demon while Sam was still a baby, prompting John to become a hunter to avenge her death and ultimately pass his knowledge on to his two sons. John was killed very early in the second season.
There is no word at this time on Jared Padalecki’s involvement in The Winchesters. Considering that Dean Winchester will only serve as the narrator for the show at this time, it would seem like there isn’t much of a rush to involve Padalecki for an appearance as Sam. That doesn’t necessarily mean that one back to the future is out of the question, perhaps as part of a flash-forward scene, as long as The Winchesters does eventually move forward and become a hit for the CW.
Meanwhile, Padalecki can be seen elsewhere on the CW as the star and executive producer of Walker, a Walker reboot, Texas Ranger. As for Ackles, his next acting gig will see him play the violent patriotic superhero Soldier in the third season of the hit Amazon series The Boys. Filming is currently underway, although a release date has yet to be set for the new episodes. This news comes to us from Deadline.
