Little Mermaid photos give first glimpse of Halle Bailey as Disney’s Ariel

One of Disney’s most anticipated live-action revamps of their own animated classics is The Little Mermaid. Following the success of The Lion King, Aladdin, The Jungle Book and more, the 1989 film which featured Ariel, Sebastian the Crab, Flounder the Fish and the evil Ursula the Sea Witch was still topping the list of other films that Disney could reinvent itself for new audiences. While news of the film’s set was thin on the ground, today plans surfaced online giving our first glimpse of Halle Bailey as the titular Aquatic Princess.

Halle Bailey is best known for her role in ABC Family’s Grown-ish, and her casting in the film makes her the first black actress to play the character. Other announcements have revealed that Daveed Digs will be voicing Sebastian the Crab, Jacob Tremblay will be singing for Flounder and, and it hurts me a bit, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. Ok it hurts a lot, but that’s how it is.

With filming for the film underway in Italy, it was only a matter of time before anyone managed to snap a sneaky photo of the stars in action, and it happened today with two set photos featuring starring Bailey on an Italian beach with her co-star Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric, Ariel’s sweetheart, in what appear to be rehearsals for scenes we expect them to be filming for real very soon.

The location and images suggest that the scene they are filming takes place after Ariel rescues Eric from a shipwreck. The footage shows Bailey wearing a CG costume, meaning much of his aquatic form will be created in post-production. Just a few years ago, having a character mostly made out of CGI would scare us, but with recent advancements in technology, the result should be mind-blowing.

That sort of thing, however, will have to wait until we get a trailer in the future. For now, we have to be content with the slightly blurry images we have today. If there will be other little details like this in the coming weeks now that filming is in full swing, we’ll have to wait and see, but like many Disney properties, fans will be taking whatever they can get. .

The Little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall, who is no stranger to musical feature films or to Disney. He directed the Oscar-nominated film version of Chicago in 2002, Into The Woods in 2014, and recently brought Disney’s favorite nanny back to the screens with Mary Poppins Returns.

The script for the film is by Jane Goldman, whose genre lineup includes the fantastic fantasy of several X-Men movies, horror starring The Woman in Black, comic book comedy Kick-Ass and the most recent adaptation of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. . Disney songwriter and mainstay Alan Menken returns once again to add four new songs to his soundtrack, which included classics such as Under The Sea and Kiss the Girl, as he did for them. live-action remakes of Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast. There is currently no release date for The Little Mermaid, but we expect it to arrive sometime in late 2022.
