Forest Whitaker returns as Saw Gerrera in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Andor spinoff series. One of the many Star Wars projects in development at Disney +, Andor Diego Luna will mainly follow his role as Cassian Andor, the character he played in Rogue One. As a prequel, the series takes place in the years leading up to the events of the film, serving as an origin story for Cassian Andor while also exploring the early days of the Rebellion-Empire feud.
At the moment, production is underway on Andor, although Disney is refraining from disclosing more information. It wasn’t entirely clear what other actors might return from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it seemed likely that more would be involved. It was previously reported that Genevieve O’Reilly, who played Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One, is on board to return. A video leak on set also appeared to confirm Duncan Pow’s return as Ruescott Melshi.
Now it appears Whitaker Forest is the next returning actor to get involved. In a recent interview on Swedish radio station Sverige Radio, Andor Stellan Skarsgard spoke about his Star Wars debut in the upcoming series. During the interview, Skarsgard claimed he shared “juicy scenes” with Whitaker, revealing that Forest was already on set for his return as Saw Gerrera. He added that he had shared “at least two good” scenes with Whitaker.
Tony Gilroy is showrunner in Andor. Alongside Diego Luna, the cast includes Alan Tudyk, Stellan Skarsgard, Kyle Soller, Genevieve O’Reilly, Fiona Shaw and Denise Gough. Stephen Schiff was previously scheduled to serve as showrunner, but took a step back to have Gilroy take over the creative direction. Schiff is still a screenwriter for the series alongside Gilroy’s brother Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and former House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon.
Andor is one of the many Star wars projects in development at Disney + following the smashing success of The Mandalorian, which currently has a third season in development. The Book of Boba Fett spin-off also just wrapped up filming for its first season, and the Star Wars: The Bad Batch animated series aired its final Season 1 episode this month. Meanwhile, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which is currently filming, will bring Ewan McGregor back to play the fan favorite character of Star Wars.
With Rogue One, Whitaker’s long film career includes spins in titles like Platoon, Panic Room, The Crying Game, and The Butler. His most recent credits include Black Panther, Finding Steve McQueen, and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. Whitaker also starred with Johnny Depp in the crime thriller film City of Lies, which was just released this year after years of delay. The actor also has a role in Aretha Franklin’s upcoming biopic Respect, which will be released on August 13.
Andor is slated for release on Disney + in 2022. An official premiere date for the 12-episode series has yet to be set. This news comes to us from TheDirect.
