If you like movies like Scream, Texas Chainsaw, Hereditary, It, and all the other classic horror movies that chill your spine, then A classic horror story will give you a new taste of fear. Netflix has dropped the trailer for the Italian horror thriller set to debut on the streaming platform on July 14, and this first look offers the goosebumps it promises.
A Classic Horror Story tells the story of five carpoolers who encounter an unexpected accident during their trip. When they wake up the next morning, they find themselves stranded in the middle of the woods with a cabin built there in the middle of nowhere. Now they must fight their way out of the Impenetrable Forest as the hut’s occult horrors threaten their lives.
The trailer for the film portrays numerous references to several horror classics. The trailer begins with a reference to the movie It, where the carpoolers discuss Pennywise. We see a cabin, just as scary and horrible as the ones in The Cabin In The Woods and Evil Dead. And then the central plot of the film revolves around a mysterious demonic cult, just like in Hereditary. Finally, the trailer features several sequences that directly reference Scream (as an unseen figure walks up to a gagged and tied up woman), as well as slasher movies like Saw and Texas Chainsaw. Plus, the trailer uses the same font they use on Halloween. Nothing really stops this collection of references in the trailer.
And these references and parallels are not just coincidences. The protagonists of the film themselves refer to the events they experience as a “classic horror story” like in the films, which is also reflected in the titles of the film. As the trailer progresses to the end, we see a bloody graphic telling us – You feel like you’ve seen it before, making these similarities to previous horror tales more obvious.
The film also mentions the myth of Osso, Mastrosso and Carcagnosso. The myth, which dates back to the beginning of the 15th century in Spain, is the story of three brothers, all men of the Church, who imposed their ethics and their morals to avenge the honor of their sisters, that a man under the protection of the king violated. They murdered the man and spent thirty years in prison. Upon their release, they stumbled upon new rules of society and wrote several new admission rites, symbols, disciplines, and secret formulas, which were different from the traditional morals and values of the church. Their crime and subsequent work on new social rules is said to mark the ancestry of crime and punishment laws. However, the movie probably gives this story a more demonic and horrifying take on it, which is not yet known.
Despite these parallels and familiarities to movies we’ve seen before, A Classic Horror Story feels like a worth-watching fusion that would literally drag hell out of audiences. No idea what this dark and gloomy horror classic really is, but, the way the trailer presents it, it could be something truly unique and special.
