When “Jurassic Park: The Ride” opened at Universal Studios Hollywood in June 1996, Spielberg, 74, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his involvement in bringing the on-screen world to our world. And while he was an integral part of the process from the start, he was unwilling to take a ride on the roller coaster and conquer his fears.
“I went up to the point of no return and went down the stairs. I’m not going on those straight 85-foot drops of water, ”Spielberg told ET at the time in a resurfaced interview. “I guess I’m a director. I demand full control. And during those two and a half seconds of falling, I’m out of control. I’m not ready to give up on this yet.
“Jurassic Park: The Ride” combined a “Jungle Cruise” experience as riders floated past animatronic dinosaurs before plunging down the track with its massive “shoot-the-fall” drop. Spielberg praised the park’s design team for developing such a spectacular drop. He said, “I did not conceive the drop of water. It was the geniuses at [Universal Creative] and they did a great job along the way.
After the release of Jurassic World in 2015 and its sequel in 2018, Universal Studios gave the attraction of the 1990s a makeover to match the films that starred. Chris Pratt and Bryce dallas howard. “Jurassic Park: The Ride” reopened in July 2019 with massive renovations, updated animatronics, new themes, and a new showdown between the T-rex and the Indominus Rex before the big fall.
While the director’s fears kept him from embarking on “The Ride,” Pratt, 42, didn’t let his own fears stop him from trying the updated version. Pratt told ET in July 2019, “I rode it today and [I was] uncool. Makes the total “face of fear”.
When the attraction reopens, the Guardians of the Galaxy star exclusively told Us Weekly that her son Jack is also excited to try the ride. “He’s really excited,” Pratt said. “I think we’ll try to do it this week. … If there’s a movie or a theme park ride that can earn you points of interest for your dad, this would be it.
