Chile, summer concerts these days are worth about $ 50,000 better than just eight dollars an hour! At least that’s the case for the teens working at a Texas fast food chain called Layne’s Chicken Fingers. According to the Daily Mail, the restaurant has speeded up the recruitment of teenage workers into managerial positions due to a staff shortage.
Job vacancies at Layne’s are not being met as many workers choose to cash their unemployment checks. As you may already know, COVID-19 relief benefits would be offered until September. So while some are waiting for their deposits, these kids are there to get to the five-figure bag. Layne owner Garrett Reed pays $ 50,000 in wages to young workers ready to take on the management challenge.
“We’re so thin in leadership that we can’t expand to open more locations,” Garrett told The Wall Street Journal in an interview. “I have a good crop of 16 and 17 year olds, but it takes me another year or two to get them used to running stores. “
The generous salary stands out in Texas, where the average salary is around $ 30,600. Garrett isn’t the only business owner finding creative ways to retain employees. The entire hospitality industry is said to be experiencing shortages, so companies like McDonald’s are also looking to raise wages. More than 300,000 vacancies in the restaurant industry were recorded in April, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“The biggest challenge for small businesses to grow right now is your workforce,” Garrett said. “We would increase twice as fast if we had more people. “
Workers apparently benefit from the higher pay that sometimes accompanies unemployment benefits compared to working nine to five. States like Massachusetts and Washington give out roughly $ 850 per week to those who qualify. To stay in business, companies must compete with the lure of “free” payments.
“I can’t pay that much and stay profitable without raising prices too much,” Garrett said.
