BBC Euro 2020 expert Alan Shearer: is he married and why he feared manslaughter charges?

Alan Shearer was the star of the show when he played for England in the Euros 25 years ago.

And, while it may seem like ancient history now, the tournament saw Alan – one of the BBC Euro 2020 pundits – firmly established as a household name.

His performance on the pitch at Euro 1996 was arguably the best of his career and led to him being hailed as one of England’s top scorers of all time.

But things nearly fell apart when he found himself embroiled in a fight that could have cost him everything.

What happened during Alan’s party?

Alan, 50, admits spending a few drunken evenings with his teammates to celebrate the success at its peak.

However, one of those nights led to an incident that almost changed her life forever.

The philanthropist revealed all about the terrifying incident during a question-and-answer session for his charity The Alan Shearer Foundation.

I think oh my God I’m going to get killed here for manslaughter.

He admitted to being terrified when, during an altercation fueled by alcohol, he hit his colleague Keith Gillespie.

Alan saw him fall to the ground, hitting his head against the concrete, where blood began to flow.

Shearer was enjoying a trip to Dublin with his teammates when the couple started arguing because Alan felt Keith was being rude to their waitress.

He said: “I looked at him and said ‘get out’ so we walked through the door and I went first and he hit me on the back of the head, he hit me right. slap.

“I saw the red mist and I turned around and hit him and I can just see him fall and fall and fall and he fell further back and hit his head against the concrete.”

Alan continued, “I think oh my gosh I’m going to get manslaughter here.”

Gillespie was rushed to hospital where, luckily for Shearer – Newcastle captain at the time – he made a full recovery.

Alan Shearer married?

It is indeed.

Alan married his wife Lainya in 1991. The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on June 8, 2021.

They have three children – Will, 18, Hollie, 23, and Chloe, 26.

Lainya has been described by Alan as a calm and reserved person who often struggles to be noticed by his fame.

How successful has Alan Shearer’s career in the field been?

Alan made 63 appearances for England, racking up 30 goals in international tournaments.

He remains the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, scoring 283 career goals and 260 league goals during his career with clubs Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle United.

The closest rival is second-placed Wayne Rooney with 208 goals, a pretty impressive gap.

Alan is the only player on the list to have scored a century at two individual clubs.

He is also the only player to have won the Golden Shoe for three consecutive seasons.

Has Alan Shearer won other awards?

Shearer has won numerous honors for his athletic career, including an OBE and a CBE.

He was also awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of Newcastle Upon Tyne and obtained a Doctorate in Civil Law from the University of Newcastle in 2009.

In 2016, a sculpture was erected outside the grounds of Newcastle FC St James’ Park due to his iconic status at the club.

In April of this year, Alan became the very first player to be introduced to the Premier League Hall of Fame.

What is Alan Shearer’s net worth?

He may have retired a long time ago, but the father-of-three’s fortune didn’t end around the same time as his football days.

In fact, Alan has carved out the kind of career most can only dream of, with a personal fortune to match.

Since hanging up his boots in 2006, Alan has always worked as an expert.

He also had a brief stint off-screen as the interim manager of former club Newcastle United for eight games.
